Read the second column carefully. Candy's "5 messages" is not a daily allowance. It is the whole free account. Secrets AI: the most usable daily cap

Secrets AI gives free users 20 messages a day, basic memory and two chat modes, and the cap resets each morning. That is enough to test whether the conversation holds up over several days. The catch is media: the free tier gets no Moments, so no images, no video and no voice. Paid plans start at $19.99 and add 8,000 Moments, but the best features sit behind the $39.99 Ultimate plan. JanitorAI: closest to unlimited text

JanitorAI's free tier is a full text platform, including its own JanitorLLM model, and you can bring your own API key. It is text only, with no images or voice, and setup takes some tinkering. Janitor+ at $12.99/month adds five times the context and priority messages. If you mainly want to write and roleplay, this is the free option with the fewest interruptions.

OurDream AI: cheap yearly, stingy free

OurDream AI charges 1 dreamcoin per message on the free plan, with no images or videos, and free users cannot buy coins or generate images at all. The yearly plan is the interesting part: $9.99/month billed yearly for unlimited messages and 1,000 dreamcoins a month, which works out to roughly 200 images. SpicyChat and Character.AI: free but with strings

SpicyChat lets free users chat with user-made characters, but you wait in a queue with short memory. Paid tiers run $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 a month after a September 2026 price rise, and paid plans skip the queue and add premium models and in-chat images. Character.AI has a big public character library and basic models with ads, but it keeps NSFW filters and added ID and selfie age checks in 2026. Neither is an adult companion app in the way Secrets or Candy is.

Skip these free tiers

CHAI's free tier is a very short trial before the paywall, ad-supported. HakkoAI advertises uncapped free text chat and full privacy, but we could not verify either claim. Treat both with caution.

How to stretch a free plan

A free account is a test drive, so test the right things:

1. Pick daily caps over lifetime caps. Twenty messages a day tells you more about an app than five messages ever will.
2. Restate names and details. Free memory is short, so repeat who you are and what you talked about. If it still forgets, that is your answer.
3. Run two or three apps side by side. Three free accounts beat one paid month for figuring out what you actually want.

Privacy: what free really costs

Free usually means your data pays part of the bill. Most apps encrypt data in transit, and Secrets and OurDream also encrypt at rest. None of the platforms we checked offers true end-to-end encryption. Secrets, Candy and OurDream may use chats to train AI models, and Candy can share message content with third-party AI providers.

OurDream's homepage claims end-to-end encryption that its own privacy policy does not support. That is a real gap, not a technicality. Account deletion is irreversible in some apps; OurDream permanently removes chat history and unused coins. Keep your real name and photos out of these chats, and treat every message as readable by the company, paid or not.
