Is Secrets AI Free? What the Free Tier Actually Gives You
Yes, Secrets AI has a permanent free tier: 20 text messages a day, basic memory, no pictures, no video, no calls you can afford. Here's what it...
Almost every companion app now advertises unlimited chat. The message counter is only half the story โ memory, premium models and media credits are where the real ceilings sit.
"Unlimited messages" has become the default promise on every AI girlfriend pricing page. It is also one of the least useful promises, because a chat with no cap and a memory that resets every twenty turns is not an unlimited conversation. It is a series of short ones with the same face.
This guide is for adults who want long, uninterrupted sessions and want to know what they are actually buying. It is built from pricing pages, help centres, terms of service and user reports gathered in October 2026. Prices move constantly, so treat every figure here as a starting point and check the checkout page before you pay.
Here is where the big names sit on raw message allowance. Note the last column โ it is usually where the money goes.
| App | Free messages | No cap on | Price from | Still metered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OurDream AI | 1 dreamcoin per message | Premium | $9.99/mo annual | Images, video, voice, Genius models |
| Secrets AI | 20 daily | Premium, Ultimate | $9.17/mo annual | Media; message length |
| Candy.ai | 5 total | Premium | $3.99/mo annual | Media; memory slots |
| Janitor AI | No cap reported on free model | Free plan | Free; Janitor+ $12.99/mo | Memory, priority |
| Nomi | Daily cap around 50 reported | Subscription | $8.33/mo annual | Images, extras |
| Kindroid | Limited free preview, changing Oct 2026 | Subscription | $13.33/mo annual | Selfies, audio, extra characters |
| SpicyChat | Queue; 100/day cap reports conflict | Paid tiers | $5.95/mo | Memory size, premium models |
| Character.AI | Typed messages uncapped (2026 reports) | Free, with ads | Free; c.ai+ $9.99/mo | Swipes, continuations, priority |
The pattern is obvious once you see it in a table: the free tiers are not generous, and the ones that look generous are generous in the least valuable dimension.
On the free plan, every message costs one dreamcoin, and free users cannot buy more coins or generate images at all. Premium removes the per-message charge. It runs $19.99 a month, or $9.99 a month if you pay yearly, and the yearly plan throws in 1,000 dreamcoins a month โ roughly 200 images' worth.
Two things survive the upgrade. Genius models still cost one coin per reply even for subscribers, and any media you generate stays metered. If your subscription lapses, OurDream blurs the images and videos you already made. Our full OurDream AI review goes through the coin maths in detail.
Secrets AI gives free users 20 messages a day. Premium removes the cap entirely at $19.99 a month, or $109.99 a year โ about $9.17 a month โ and adds 8,000 Moments monthly plus video and voice. Ultimate at $39.99 a month adds Lorebooks, group chats and proactive messages.
What Premium does not remove is message length. Free replies are capped at 500 characters, Premium at 1,000, Ultimate at 2,000. Moments do not roll over month to month, and subscriptions are generally non-refundable outside the EU and UK. We rate Secrets AI 9.9 out of 10 overall.
Five messages in total on the free plan, one image, one character. That is not a trial; it is a look through the window. Premium is $13.99 monthly, $8.99 quarterly, or $3.99 a month on the annual plan ($47.88 up front). For text chat, that is the cheapest genuinely uncapped option on this list.
The catch is everything around the chat. Media is limited to 100 tokens a month, and memory is thin enough that reviewers routinely note the bot losing the thread. Refunds are only available within 24 hours and only if you have used 20 tokens or fewer. We rate Candy.ai 9.8 out of 10 โ the pictures carry it, the memory does not.
Janitor AI runs its own JanitorLLM model for free, and 2026 reviews report no daily message cap on it. The trade is memory: the free window sits around 9,000 tokens. Janitor+ at $12.99 a month, launched in June 2026, offers roughly five times that.
Janitor has no images and no voice. If you bring an outside model, the provider bills you per message. Read our Janitor AI vs SpicyChat comparison if you are weighing it against a paid alternative.
Nomi's free tier is reported at around 50 messages a day. A subscription at $15.99 monthly or about $8.33 monthly annually lifts that, but images run on paid Nomi Credits, and an April 2026 update changed some character looks.
Kindroid is $15.99 a month or $13.33 on annual billing, with Ultra and Max tiers above that. Its free Lite model was due to end on 1 October 2026, replaced by a roughly 50-interaction preview. Selfies, audio and extra characters all cost credits on top. Kindroid also changes tiers more often than most, so check before subscribing.
SpicyChat raised prices in September 2026 to $5.95, $19.95 and $29.95 monthly tiers. Some 2026 guides cite a 100-message daily free cap, but reports conflict, and free users queue. Memory size and premium model access are what the paid tiers really buy.
Character.AI, with around 20 million monthly active users, reportedly does not cap typed messages in 2026. What it meters is swipes and continuations, and free users get ads and a slow mode. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month. It is also strictly filtered and not a girlfriend app in any meaningful sense.
Not every platform folds the cap into the subscription. Some keep counting.
| App | Free allowance | Paid caps |
|---|---|---|
| GirlfriendGPT | Not stated | Premium 5,000/mo, Deluxe 20,000, Elite uncapped |
| PepHop | ~20 messages | 2,000, 5,000 or 16,000 |
| Joyland | 10 credits daily | Standard 5,000/mo; Premium uncapped |
| Joi | Not stated | Neurons, ~4 per romantic message |
| Nectar | 15 daily | Advanced models cost extra credits |
GirlfriendGPT is the clearest example: only the top Elite tier is uncapped, which means the middle tiers are selling you a bigger bucket, not an open tap. Joi's neuron system is worse in a quieter way โ roughly four neurons per romantic message means the cost of a warm reply is higher than the cost of a cold one.
And watch for contradictory marketing. AI Angels advertises unlimited messages while also charging one credit per message with 15 free credits a day. Both statements are on the same site. When a pricing page argues with itself, believe the credit system.
When a platform says unlimited, it usually means one specific thing: no visible counter on standard-model text replies. Everything else is either throttled, queued or sold separately.
No daily cap often means no published cap, not infinite capacity. Throttling exists, and it rarely announces itself. Comparative write-ups suggest most AI platforms keep free users somewhere between 50 and 100 messages a day, whether or not that number appears in the terms.
Free users share capacity with everyone else. At busy times platforms queue them or quietly switch them to a slower model. Paying users get priority. If your replies suddenly get shorter and dumber at 9pm, that is not your companion losing interest โ it is the routing.
This is the one that catches people. Message limits and memory limits are different systems. The model reads a limited recent window of the conversation, and older messages drop out of view unless the app has long-term memory built in. Character.AI users report memory fading after 20 to 30 messages. A thread can be 4,000 messages long and the bot still only sees the last slice of it.
Unlimited text almost never means unlimited pictures, voice or video. Candy gives Premium users 100 media tokens a month. OurDream charges coins for Genius replies and media. Secrets bundles 8,000 Moments but does not let them roll over. Reviewers report heavy Candy media users spending $25 to $80 a month in total. Our breakdown of video features covers which apps even make clips.
There is no big NSFW companion app with a genuinely uncapped free tier. Free plans are either capped, per-message, or crippled in some other way โ OurDream's free users cannot even buy coins or generate images. The closest thing to free and unlimited is Janitor on its own model, and you pay for that in memory. Character.AI is uncapped on typed messages but brings queues, ads and a filter that rules it out as a companion app.
If you want to see what the free tiers really give you before committing, our guide to what you get before you pay lays it out side by side.
Some people skip the subscription entirely and run a model through a front end like SillyTavern. It is more work and you pay the model provider per message, but the memory window is yours to set and no company is counting your turns. Jenova markets itself on unlimited messaging, persistent memory and 80โ90% roleplay simulation completion, though those are vendor claims and the market figures it cites โ a $2.5 billion roleplay chat market by 2031 โ are unverified. Sigma Browser claims to run AI locally for better privacy. Treat both as claims to check, not facts to trust.
Long chats mean a lot of personal data in one place. Candy, Secrets and OurDream do not promise end-to-end encryption, and their policies allow chat data to be used for training. Deletion practices vary: Secrets removes chat history immediately when you delete your account, OurDream within 24 to 48 hours, and Candy keeps account data for up to three years after your last activity unless you ask them not to.
The sector has form. A 2024 breach at Muah.ai exposed around 1.9 million email addresses linked to explicit prompts. If you would not want a transcript read aloud, do not type it.
Unlimited messaging is designed to keep you in the app. The American Psychological Association raised dependency concerns about AI companions in 2026, and the risk is not hypothetical: a bot that never gets bored, never sleeps and never pushes back is easy to prefer to people who do all three. Set your own limits, because the app will not.
Secrets AI is the strongest pick for genuinely uncapped chat with real memory behind it. OurDream AI offers the best value if you want images alongside the text. Candy.ai is the cheapest uncapped text on an annual plan, provided you accept thin memory and metered media. Janitor AI is the only free unlimited option worth using, and you pay for it in short memory. Unlimited chat almost never means unlimited memory, models or media โ and that is the part the pricing page leaves out.
OurDream, Secrets, Candy, Nomi and Kindroid all advertise unlimited messaging on their paid tiers. Janitor's free model has no reported daily cap, but its memory window is short. Read the metered column as carefully as the message column.
Not among the big NSFW apps โ their free tiers are capped or charge per message. Janitor and Character.AI do not cap typed messages, but both bring queues, and Character.AI adds ads and a strict filter that rules it out as a companion app.
Message limits and memory limits are separate systems. The model only reads a limited recent window of the conversation, so older messages drop out of view unless the app has long-term memory. Some Character.AI users report memory fading after 20 to 30 messages.
Free users share capacity with everyone else. At peak times platforms queue them or switch them to a slower model, while paying users get priority. Shorter, dumber replies in the evening are usually routing, not personality.
Mostly, yes. Character apps offer many often-SFW characters and companion apps focus on one romantic partner, but the message rules work the same way on both.
