BlogAI Girlfriend Call: Live Voice, What a Minute Costs, and Who Hears It

Live voice calls are the feature most companion apps charge the most for, and the one where the maths is hardest to see. Here's what a minute costs on each app, and what happens to the audio.

A typed reply you can skim. A spoken one you can't. That's why the AI girlfriend call sits near the top of most people's wish list, and near the bottom of most free tiers. Voice is expensive to run, so apps meter it โ€” in Moments, dreamcoins, tokens, credits or characters โ€” and the per-minute cost is rarely printed where you'd find it first.

Below is what the published pricing pages and help docs actually say about live calls across eight companion services: who has them, what a minute costs, how much you get before you top up, and what the vendor claims happens to the audio. Where a number comes from a vendor, it's labelled as a claim. Where it comes from user reports, it's labelled as reported.

Which companion apps actually let you talk out loud

Live audio isn't universal. Several well-known apps offer voice notes โ€” a spoken message you play back โ€” and stop there. A real call means the microphone stays open, the companion answers in a second or two, and you can interrupt.

The apps with something closer to a live conversation:

  • Secrets AI โ€” live audio, billed at 50 Moments per minute
  • OurDream AI โ€” live audio at 50 dreamcoins per minute, plus a read-aloud option for written messages at 5 coins per paragraph
  • Candy.ai โ€” audio in beta, reported at around 3 tokens per minute
  • Kindroid โ€” audio calls plus a video add-on, and voice cloning from roughly 60 seconds of audio you own
  • Nomi โ€” hands-free audio, included with built-in voices
  • DreamGF โ€” audio at 7 tokens per minute
  • Muah AI โ€” an in-chat phone call, gated behind Ultra VIP
  • Replika โ€” preset-voice calls, behind the Pro plan

Video calls are a much shorter list. Kindroid's live avatar is the clearest example; most other apps that advertise "video" are selling generated clips, not a two-way camera session.

How a live call actually works under the hood

There's no phone line. Your speech is transcribed to text, a language model writes the reply, and text-to-speech turns that reply into a voice you hear. The whole loop is meant to close in one to two seconds.

That pause is the entire experience. Past roughly two seconds, the conversation stops feeling like a conversation and starts feeling like waiting on hold. Nomi's replies were measured at about 1 to 1.5 seconds after a January 2026 update, which is the right end of the range. Kindroid lets you set the pause threshold anywhere from half a second to five seconds, which is useful if you think slowly out loud but punishing if you set it too high.

Two more mechanics worth knowing before you pay:

  • Silence handling. Nomi drops the call after 60 seconds of silence. Set the phone down mid-thought and you'll come back to a dead line.
  • Memory during calls. Kindroid's memory recall pauses while you're on a call. The companion you're talking to may not have the same recall it does in text.

Voice notes versus live calls

Don't pay for a call if a voice note does the job. A voice note is a one-way clip: cheap, easy to replay, and often bundled where calls aren't. OurDream reading a written message aloud costs 5 dreamcoins per paragraph โ€” a fraction of a live minute. DreamGF charges 3 tokens for a voice message against 7 for a call minute.

Live calls earn their price when you want interruption, back-and-forth, and the rhythm of someone answering. If you mainly want to hear the voice, a note is the cheaper route. If you want to talk, budget for the minute rate.

What each plan costs, and what it buys

The per-minute rate only means something next to the subscription that feeds it. The table below is the money side.

Secrets: the most minutes, if you skip the pictures

Secrets' premium plan is $19.99 monthly or $109.99 yearly with 8,000 Moments. At 50 Moments a minute, that's up to 160 minutes โ€” but only if you spend nothing on images. One image costs the same as one call minute, so a picture habit eats the voice budget fast. Top-ups run $11.99 for 4,000 Moments per the help wiki, which works out near 15 cents a minute. Monthly Moments don't roll over, and the free tier can't call at all. Our Secrets AI review goes deeper on the memory side.

OurDream: generous chat, thin voice allowance

OurDream's $19.99 monthly plan (or $9.99 monthly on a yearly commitment) includes unlimited chat plus 1,000 coins โ€” about 20 call minutes. That's the tightest voice allowance in this group. The homepage claims end-to-end encryption, but the privacy policy only says encryption at rest and in transit, which is not the same thing.

Candy.ai: cheap minutes on paper, beta on the line

Candy Premium lists 100 tokens at $13.99 monthly or $3.99 monthly on a yearly plan โ€” roughly 30 minutes if you never touch a photo. In practice tokens pay for every image and all video, and heavy users report $25 to $80 a month in total. The call feature itself is still beta. Our Candy.ai review covers the token maths in full.

Kindroid: the voice-control option

Kindroid's base plan carries a 1,000,000-character voice budget, about 1,000 minutes of V2 speech. Newer speech versions cost more: V3 at 1.5 times V2 and V4 at 1.75 times. Calls themselves bill 400 credits per minute plus voice output. You can use a stock voice, a described one, or clone one from about 60 seconds of audio you own the rights to. Avatar video and selfies cost extra credits, and shared calls rotate between several characters. It's the most configurable setup here and the least predictable to budget.

Nomi: the most minutes for the money

Nomi includes hands-free audio with built-in voices, unlimited, on a $15.99 monthly plan. If call minutes are the point, this is the simplest equation in the table. The catch is the limited voice set and the 60-second silence drop.

Muah AI: a phone call behind a $99.99 gate

Muah's in-chat call works by pressing Call, allowing the mic, and letting the character answer with the recent chat as context. Checkout limits calls to Ultra VIP: $99.99 monthly or $999 yearly. Reviewers have called the call quality mixed, and an older Reddit post said calls were US-only. A 2024 breach leaked roughly 1.9 million email addresses plus prompts.

AI boyfriend calls work the same way

Nothing in the billing changes with the gender of the character. The same apps, the same per-minute rates, the same silence rules. If you're comparing on voice quality or memory rather than price, the reviews hub sorts every app we've scored.

Can an AI companion call your actual phone number?

No. There's no verified case of an AI companion dialling a real phone number, on any of these services. Every call runs inside the app or the website, Muah's "phone call" included. Kindroid comes closest to reaching your normal messaging life โ€” it can message over iMessage or RCS โ€” but calls stay in-app. If someone tells you their AI girlfriend rang them, ask which app, because the answer is almost certainly "it didn't".

Setting up a first call without wasting money

  1. Text for a day or two first. Voice is a poor place to discover the character has no idea who you are.
  2. Test on a short call. Two minutes tells you whether the latency is tolerable and the voice grates or doesn't.
  3. Check what the free tier gives you. Secrets' free tier can't call at all. Kindroid's free preview includes 5,000 voice credits plus a 50-message cap. Candy, OurDream and Nomi all keep voice behind paid plans.
  4. Do the arithmetic before committing to a year. A yearly plan is cheaper per month and a longer commitment if voice turns out not to be your thing.

Memory is what makes a call worth the minute rate

A cheap call with a companion who forgets your name is worse value than a pricier one who doesn't. Secrets transcribes call audio and keeps the transcript for memory, which is why its minutes cost what they do. Kindroid's memory recall pauses during calls. Before you pay for voice anywhere, work out how the app handles continuity โ€” it's the difference between talking to someone and talking to a demo.

What happens to the audio

Read the privacy page, not the homepage. Secrets deletes call audio after transcription and keeps the transcript; its chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Kindroid says it processes microphone input, voice output and camera feed ephemerally, without storing them. OurDream's encryption claim doesn't appear in its own privacy policy in the same terms.

Practical habits:

  • Use headphones. It keeps the call out of the room and the room out of the call.
  • Keep your real name, address and passwords off the line.
  • Don't clone a voice you don't own the rights to.
  • Assume anything you say may be logged unless the policy says otherwise, because it usually is.

One more thing worth saying plainly: these apps can't offer the mutual bond a real relationship does, and leaning on them hard has been linked to unrealistic expectations, dependency and isolation. That's not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to know what you're buying.

Bottom line

For the most minutes, Nomi. For memory, Secrets. For voice control and cloning, Kindroid. For cheap minutes โ€” if you can live without pictures โ€” Candy's beta. The same picks hold for AI boyfriends. Check the per-minute rate against the plan, text first, and keep your personal details off the line.

Frequently asked questions

Rarely. Secrets' free tier can't call at all, and Candy, OurDream and Nomi all keep voice behind paid plans. Kindroid's free preview includes 5,000 voice credits plus a 50-message cap, which is the closest thing to a free trial call.

Only on a few platforms. Kindroid's live avatar is the clearest example; most other apps that advertise video sell generated clips rather than a two-way camera session.

No โ€” there's no verified case of any companion app dialling a real phone number. Calls run in the app or on the website, Muah's in-chat call included. Kindroid can message over iMessage or RCS, but calls stay in-app.

Your speech is transcribed to text, a language model writes the reply, and text-to-speech voices it back. The target loop is one to two seconds; past roughly two seconds the conversation stops feeling like one.
