NovelAI vs AI Dungeon: A Writing Suite or a Playable Adventure?
NovelAI is a prose tool that happens to run a text adventure; AI Dungeon is a game that happens to produce prose. Pick by what you actually want...
Janitor AI is a huge free character library that asks you to bring your own model for the best results. CrushOn AI is a hosted service that works the moment you sign up. The gap isn't quality so much as who does the plumbing.
Janitor AI and CrushOn AI start from opposite ends. Janitor AI is a front end: a big public character library and a creation tool bolted to a model you can swap out for a better one with your own API keys. CrushOn AI is a hosted service: you sign up, you pick a model from a menu, and you chat. Both allow adult content, both have free tiers, and both can cost more than the sticker price suggests. Which one suits you comes down to how much setup you'll tolerate and what you want to do beyond text.
We haven't run accounts on either. What follows is drawn from published help centres, pricing pages, privacy policies, terms and user reports, with vendor claims labelled as such. Prices were checked against the official pricing pages in October 2026.

We rate Janitor AI – out of 10 and CrushOn AI 8.8 out of 10 overall. Neither number is settled; both platforms change often enough that a score is a snapshot, not a verdict for the ages.
This is the distinction everything else hangs on. Janitor AI runs its own model, JLLM, and it works without an API key. You can sign up and roleplay on day one. But the help centre is blunt that the in-house model is the baseline, not the ceiling: connect a proxy and your own API keys, and the writing improves depending on which backend model you pick. That means an OpenRouter key, a proxy URL, a model name, and a bit of patience in a settings panel. Quality varies by backend model, which is exactly the point.
CrushOn AI does the plumbing for you. Its in-house models are Leo, Taurus, Mochi and Sagittarius. It also routes outside models such as Deepseek, Gemini 2.5 Flash and free Grok 3, plus premium models including Claude Opus 4.6, Kimi K2 and GPT 5. You choose from a list; CrushOn handles the connection. The trade is control for convenience. If you enjoy tuning a setup, Janitor AI rewards you. If you want to be chatting ninety seconds after signing up, CrushOn wins before the comparison gets interesting.
On Janitor AI, the free tier gets you the whole site: all public characters, the creation tools and JLLM. No trial clock. The catch is speed. Users report slower responses on the free tier, and JLLM has a high-usage queue at peak times. janitor+, which launched on 24 June 2026, adds priority messages for faster responses when the site is busy.
CrushOn AI is plug-and-play. Signup, pick a character, go. Its chat tools are genuinely useful: edit messages, pin facts, branch scenes and switch models mid-conversation. That last one is a nice escape hatch when a model starts drifting.
Janitor AI's help centre puts the public library at 1.4M+ characters. Some comparisons claim over 100,000 cards, and older guides say hundreds of thousands; the help centre figure is the one to trust. Comparison sites also suggest Janitor's library has more veteran creators writing long, detailed definitions, which shows in how characters behave over a long chat.
CrushOn AI publishes no official character count. Some comparisons claim more than a million cards; third-party estimates range from about 7,000 to several million. Treat all of those with suspicion. What's visible is the presentation: the library is gamified with popularity scores, likes and chat counters. That's handy for finding something that works, and it nudges you toward whatever is trending rather than whatever is well written.
Janitor AI's builder uses the classic card format: personality, scenario, first message, example dialogue and tags. The help centre advises staying below roughly 1,500 permanent tokens, which is good discipline if you want a character that stays coherent.
CrushOn AI's builder covers name, avatar, personality, greeting, scenario, scene cards and profile cards. Scene cards are the more interesting addition, letting you set up situations rather than one opening. A character import claim circulates for CrushOn, but we found no confirmation of it, and there's no verified export tool on either site. If you write long character cards, keep your own copies.
Both platforms allow adult content, and both ban anything involving minors. That's the common ground. The mechanics differ.
Janitor AI has an NSFW toggle plus Limitless and Limited tags. Read the help pages closely and you'll see the toggle controls which characters are visible, not what the model will say. JLLM is permissive for fiction, and the free tier is broadly permissive. Age checks are where it gets regional: Janitor uses k-ID for ID checks in Australia and Brazil from 24 April 2026, and the UK followed on 15 June 2026. Elsewhere, age is self-declared, on the free and paid tiers alike.
CrushOn AI splits access into three levels: Filtered, Unfiltered for adult text, and Hidden Content for explicit images. Hidden Content requires a registered account, two days of check-ins and 50 spent message credits. The official wiki ties adult content to those switches, not to whether you pay. Most regions have no ID verification; you confirm you're 18 or older. Users on Trustpilot report a small card charge of about $0.99 to unlock the 18+ switch, and one blog mentions $1 to $2 in Australia, Brazil, the UK and parts of Europe. A card charge is not ID verification, and the amounts are unconfirmed, so don't treat either figure as policy.
Janitor AI's terms describe automated scanning, and staff can review flagged content. CrushOn AI's guidelines say human moderators and automated tools check accounts, characters and interactions. Neither is a free-for-all, and both keep records they can look at. If that bothers you, the honest answer is to avoid putting identifying details into chats on either platform.
Context window is the number to watch, because it decides how much of the conversation the model can still see.
Janitor AI's JLLM runs at about 8K to 9K tokens. janitor+ gives you roughly five times that. Janitor also has persistent memory tools including Chat Memory recaps, though performance varies. Since the JLLM swap in April 2026, users have reported characters turning repetitive. That's a user report, not a measurement, but it's consistent enough to mention.
CrushOn AI gives 8K on the free tier, 16K on Standard through Luxe, and 24K on Elite and Imperial. It adds auto-summaries and pinned messages. Reviewers generally find CrushOn keeps emotional continuity better in long chats, though others report recall dropping off after 80 to 100 messages. Your mileage will depend on the model you've picked and how much you pin.
This one isn't close. Janitor AI is completely text-based: no image generation, no voice, no video. If you want a companion who can talk back out loud, Janitor can't help.
CrushOn AI has voice on every tier, and voice notes get answered in character. Custom voice cloning gives you one slot free and up to 30 on Imperial. Group chat with multiple characters works on any paid plan. Pictures are the weak spot: characters only send images if the creator built them in, so don't expect a generator. If visuals matter more than text, look at platforms built around images, such as [[Candy.ai|/go/candy-ai]] (our Candy.ai review covers the token costs) or [[OurDream AI|/go/ourdream-ai]], which does images and video alongside unlimited chat for $9.99/mo billed yearly, though it blurs images if your subscription lapses.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Janitor AI free | $0 | JLLM, all public characters, creation tools, own API keys |
| janitor+ | $12.99/mo or $8.25/mo yearly | Priority messages, roughly 5x context, 300 enhanced swipes |
| CrushOn Free | $0 | Unlimited free models, 100 credits a month, 8K context |
| CrushOn Standard | $5.99/mo or $4.90/mo yearly | 2,000 credits, 16K context, multi-character rooms |
| CrushOn Premium | $14.99/mo or $7.90/mo yearly | 6,000 credits, 16K context |
| Luxe, Elite, Imperial | $39.99, $89.99, $199.99/mo | 20,000 to 125,000 credits |
Two things worth flagging. First, some comparison sites list CrushOn Premium at $7.90 a month; that's the annual rate, and the monthly price is $14.99. Second, the proxy route on Janitor AI isn't free. One reviewer estimates heavy Janitor users pay an extra $10 to $30 a month to their API provider, billed per token. That spending never appears on your Janitor bill, so track it yourself. CrushOn's credit system has the same shape in reverse: free models are unlimited on every tier, but Pro and Ultra users spend credits, and heavy users hit caps and buy more.
Janitor AI's free tier is the whole site: characters, creation tools, JLLM, no trial clock. The costs are queues, a smaller context window and a default model that users increasingly describe as repetitive.
CrushOn AI's free tier includes unlimited free models and 100 credits a month at 8K context, but it comes with limits that matter. Responses cap at 225 characters, there are no group rooms, and chat history is deleted after seven days of inactivity. That last one is the kind of detail people discover too late.
Neither platform is a private diary, and neither claims to be.
Janitor AI's privacy policy is dated 17 September 2026, and the operator is JanitorAI Inc. It collects account details, characters, conversation content, IP, device and usage data. Chats are stored on servers, not end-to-end encrypted, and are reviewable if flagged. Character cards and conversations get sent to whichever model you've chosen, so a proxy adds a third party to the chain. That doesn't make proxies bad; it means you should know who's running yours.
CrushOn AI's terms name TECHIEPIE LTD, a Cyprus company, as the operator. Mozilla's Privacy Not Included flagged CrushOn in February 2024. Its policy says conversation content may be used to train models and some data goes to marketing, and it doesn't mention encryption. Billing may appear as SubscribeStar on your statement, and fees are non-refundable except where the law requires. Worth knowing before you hit subscribe.
The practical version: start free on both, share nothing personal, and decide what you're comfortable with before you attach a card. If privacy is your main concern, a single-companion service with a clearer data story may suit you better; Secrets AI is one option we've written up, and OurDream AI vs Secrets AI compares the memory-versus-media trade.
Janitor AI has an official app, "Janitor: Interactive Stories", in the App Store and on Google Play, rated 17+. It opens in Safe Mode, so the website remains the most complete version.
CrushOn AI's terms mention App Store and Google Play apps, but its FAQ points you to a web shortcut or an APK. That's a meaningful difference if you mostly chat on a phone, and it's another reason to be careful about lookalike apps using the CrushOn name.
| Janitor AI | CrushOn AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Pros | Free core site, huge character library, deep creation tools, any model you like | Plug-and-play, 20+ models, voice, cheap Standard tier |
| Cons | Queues, repetitive default model, proxy setup, no media | Weak privacy record, credit limits, confusing billing |
Pick Janitor AI if you already have API keys or don't mind getting them, you care more about writing and character definitions than about voice, and you want the biggest public library without paying a subscription. It's also the better fit if you're on iOS and want an official app.
Pick CrushOn AI if you want to be chatting within minutes, you want voice and multi-character rooms, and you're happy with a modest Standard subscription at $5.99 a month. It's the friendlier first month.
Pick neither if privacy is your deciding factor, or if you want pictures generated rather than painted into a character card. In that case, our ranking of the best AI girlfriend apps by what they actually cost is a more useful starting point, and the Candy AI vs OurDream AI comparison covers the image-heavy end of the market.
Janitor AI gives you a free core, the largest character library we can verify, the deepest creation tools, and a default model you'll probably want to replace. CrushOn AI gives you everything built in, voice included, for a fee that starts low and scales to $199.99 a month at the top. Start free on both. Share nothing personal. Upgrade only once you know which one keeps your conversations alive past message 100, because that's the thing the feature lists never tell you.
CrushOn AI is easier to start with: it works right after signup with built-in models and a simple interface. Janitor AI's bots are free too, but getting the best results means setting up a proxy and your own API keys.
Janitor AI costs nothing if you stay on JLLM. If you add a proxy, one reviewer estimates $10 to $30 a month in API spending, billed per token and invisible on your Janitor bill. CrushOn AI's cheapest paid tier is Standard at $5.99 a month.
Not according to its official wiki, which ties adult content to content switches rather than your plan. Users report a small regional card charge to unlock the 18+ switch, but those amounts are unconfirmed and a card charge isn't ID verification.
On Janitor AI, ID checks apply in Australia and Brazil from 24 April 2026 and in the UK from 15 June 2026; elsewhere age is self-declared. CrushOn AI has no ID verification in most regions and asks you to confirm you're 18 or older.
