NovelAI vs AI Dungeon: A Writing Suite or a Playable Adventure?
NovelAI is a prose tool that happens to run a text adventure; AI Dungeon is a game that happens to produce prose. Pick by what you actually want...
Candy AI wins on images, video and price per month. Darlink AI wins on character variety and long-term recall, but only on its most expensive tier. Here is the full comparison.
Two apps, two very different pitches. Candy.ai sells itself on pictures: fast, good-looking, realistic images of a character you build in a few clicks. Darlink AI sells breadth: more art styles, more sliders, more roleplay engines, and a memory system that gets better as you pay more.
On the numbers, we rate Candy.ai 9.8 out of 10 and Darlink AI โ out of 10. That gap is real, but it hides the interesting part. Pick the wrong tier on Darlink and you are paying $49.99 a month for recall you never get on the cheaper plans. Pick Candy and you get a companion that forgets your last conversation after two or three days.
This piece walks through what each platform actually does, what the tokens buy, where the NSFW rules differ, and where your money and data go. Both are 18+ services. Both involve real spending decisions.
If you want a short answer: Candy AI is the safer default for most people. It is cheaper at the annual rate, the image quality is the best we have seen described in user reports, and the cancellation path is at least documented. Darlink AI is the pick only if you care about unusual character types or you are willing to pay for the top tier's memory.

Darlink AI is operated by FameLink SA, a company registered in Montsevelier in the Swiss canton of Jura. It runs in a browser only. There is no Darlink app on the App Store or Google Play, so everything happens on the mobile site or desktop. That matters for two reasons: no app-store billing protections, and no app-store review process standing between the platform and your payment details.
Candy.ai is run by EverAI Limited, based in Malta. It also has no native app, but the web app installs as a PWA on your phone, which gets you an icon and a full-screen window without the store. Malta means GDPR applies to EU and UK users, and the company's policies are written with that in mind.
Both are chat-first companion products: you create or pick a character, talk to them, and generate images or video of them. Both gate adult content behind payment and age checks. Beyond that, they diverge fast.
Darlink gives you five style families: realistic, anime, fantasy, furry and cartoon. Inside those, you get roughly nine ethnicity options and sliders for hair, eyes, skin tone and body. It is the sort of builder that rewards people who know what they want and get annoyed when a platform only offers two presets.
Candy keeps it narrower: realistic and anime, with a choice of girls or guys. The Create My AI builder is straightforward and costs about 10 tokens to make a custom character. It is quick and it works, but if you want a fantasy creature or a cartoon style, Candy simply does not offer it.
So: Darlink for range, Candy for speed. If you already know the exact character you want and it fits Candy's two styles, the narrower builder will not hold you back.
Darlink's chat and roleplay were rated 7/10 in the notes we worked from. The roleplay engine itself is tiered: Quick on Essential, Deep on Advanced, and an Elite engine on Ultimate. That is a real difference, not marketing fluff. The cheaper plans give you a competent chatbot; the top plan gives you a scene-setting partner with more room to improvise.
Candy's text chat is unlimited on Premium, which is a meaningfully different promise. You are not counting messages or watching a limit. The trade-off is repetition: user reports describe conversations that loop back on themselves, and the storyline resetting after 48 to 72 hours, which we cover below.
If you want to write long, branching scenes, Darlink's tiered engines are the better tool. If you want to message someone on the bus without doing maths, Candy's unlimited chat is the easier purchase.
Both platforms allow adult content for verified adults on paid plans. The mechanics differ.
Darlink requires age verification and a paid plan to access NSFW features. Signup uses email verification. The Swiss operator's policies are less detailed in public reporting than Candy's.
Candy blocks free users from opening 18+ media entirely. It also bans minor-like content explicitly, and the company says known CSAM is reported to NCMEC. That is the standard baseline you should expect from any paid companion service, and it is worth checking on any platform before you subscribe.
Neither app is a free-for-all. If a platform advertises "no filters at all", treat that as a red flag about how it handles age verification, not a feature.
This is where the two products part company most sharply, and where the pricing gets interesting. For a deeper look at how Candy handles it, our Candy.ai review goes through the reset problem in detail.
Darlink sells memory as a tier feature:
That last one is the only memory system in this comparison that sounds like it could hold a relationship together over weeks. It also costs $49.99 a month.
Candy takes a different approach. Premium Plus gives you 20 memory slots and user personas, so you can pin facts you want the character to keep. In practice, though, users report the storyline resetting after 48 to 72 hours, which undercuts the slots. Twenty pinned facts do not help much if the conversation around them keeps restarting.
Our take: Darlink wins memory, but only on Ultimate. On Essential or Advanced, Candy's 20 slots are at least as useful, and Candy costs a fraction of the price.
Candy's image score in our notes is 9/10, and the realism is the reason. Roughly 4 tokens per image, and the results look like photographs rather than renders. Darlink charges 2 tokens per image, which sounds like better value until you read the user reports: results are inconsistent and often do not follow the prompt. Cheap images you delete are not cheap.
Video is worse for Darlink. Clips run 5 to 10 seconds at 20 tokens each, and one tester lost about 80 tokens to failed attempts. That is four clips' worth of tokens gone with nothing to show. Candy's image-to-video costs about 12 tokens, and its Live Action mode runs up to 120 seconds, which is a different category of product.
Voice:
If talking out loud to your companion matters, Candy is the only one of the two with a confirmed calling feature.
Subscription prices are the headline. Tokens are the bill. Here is how the plans stack up.
| Plan | Price | Tokens/month | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darlink Essential | $12.99/month | 100 | 6,000 messages, Basic recall |
| Darlink Advanced | $27.99/month | 300 | 9,000 messages, Enhanced recall |
| Darlink Ultimate | $49.99/month | 500 | Unlimited messages, Living recall |
| Candy Premium monthly | $13.99/month | 100 | Unlimited text chat |
| Candy Premium annual | $47.88/year | 100 | $3.99 a month |
| Candy Premium Plus | Shown at checkout | 330 | 20 memory slots, personas |
Candy's annual plan is the standout number here: $47.88 for a year works out to $3.99 a month. There is also a quarterly option at $26.97. Premium Plus pricing is only shown at checkout, which is annoying but not unusual.
Be careful with comparison pages. Several still quote Candy at $12.99 a month. The verified current monthly price is $13.99. Those pages are out of date.
Darlink advertises up to 44% savings on annual billing. One review site lists annual prices of $119.88, $227.88 and $395.88, which work out closer to 23-34% savings. Do the maths yourself before you commit to a year.
Top-ups are reported at $9.99 per 100 tokens on both platforms. Heavy Candy media users report total monthly spends of $25 to $80. That is the number to plan around, not the subscription price.
Neither free tier will tell you much.
Darlink's free access gives you limited messages and one character, and reportedly no memory and no media generation. So you cannot test the features that differentiate the paid tiers.
Candy's free tier is 5 messages, 1 character and 1 image. It is enough to see the interface and the image quality. It is not enough to judge a month-long subscription.
If you are deciding between the two, budget for one paid month on whichever you pick. Treat it as the real trial.
Both platforms handle sensitive content, so the data question is not paranoia. It is basic diligence.
Darlink: charges appear as DARLINK AI on your statement. Purchases are generally final and tokens are not refunded. Cancellation is via profile settings or [email protected]. The company keeps text, voice, device data and IP addresses, and may analyse uploaded images. It says it does not sell user data, but it runs Google Analytics and Facebook Pixel, and conversations may be used to improve responses. Trustpilot sits at 2.6/5 from 11 reviews as of October 9, 2026, with cancellation complaints recurring.
Candy: charges appear as EverAI. The refund policy is tight: within 24 hours only, maximum 20 tokens spent, card payments only. EU and UK users get a prorated 14-day right, which is worth knowing. Cancellation runs through My Profile, Settings, Unsubscribe. Chats are encrypted in transit but not end-to-end, and account data may be retained up to three years past your last activity.
Practical steps for either platform:
Pick Candy AI if: you want realistic images, you want to try voice calls, you want unlimited text chat without counting messages, or you want the cheapest legitimate entry point at $3.99 a month on the annual plan. It is also the better choice if you value a documented cancellation path over a broader character builder.
Pick Darlink AI if: you want fantasy, furry or cartoon characters, you want fine-grained sliders, and you are prepared to pay $49.99 a month for the Living memory tier. On Essential or Advanced, Darlink is hard to recommend against Candy at the same or lower price.
Pick neither if: you are not comfortable with the data retention terms on either. That is a legitimate conclusion.
If neither fits, a few other names come up repeatedly:
One more caution: a roundup we came across rated Darlink 9.4/10 and claimed 400B+ parameter models. Neither company publishes model sizes in our sources. Treat that roundup's numbers with suspicion.
Candy AI wins on price, image quality, video length, voice calls and a clearer exit. Darlink AI wins on character variety and on long-term recall, but only on the $49.99 Ultimate tier. For most adults deciding between the two, Candy is the better first month.
Whichever you choose: start with one month, cap your token spending before you begin, and keep proof of any cancellation. The subscription is the cheap part. The tokens are where the money goes.
For most people, Candy AI. It is cheaper on the annual plan, its image quality is stronger, and it has confirmed voice calls. Darlink AI is the better pick only if you want unusual character styles or the Living memory tier on the $49.99 Ultimate plan.
Darlink's Living tier holds context for 30+ days including emotional cues, which helps continuity. Candy's storyline resets after 48 to 72 hours according to user reports, which can break the illusion. Both are agreeable by design, so take a break if the app starts replacing real relationships.
No. Neither Darlink AI nor Candy AI has an app on the App Store or Google Play. Candy's web app can be installed as a PWA on your phone, while Darlink is a mobile site only.
Candy's annual plan at $3.99 a month is the lowest entry point, and its images cost about 4 tokens versus Darlink's 2. Per-image cost favours Darlink, but failed generations eat that advantage. Heavy media users on Candy report $25 to $80 a month in total.
Darlink has repeated cancellation complaints and generally non-refundable purchases. Candy refunds only within 24 hours, with a 20-token spending cap and card payments only. On both, use a unique password, avoid real names and face photos, and screenshot your cancellation confirmation.
