We rate SpicyChat – out of 10 and Character AI – out of 10 overall. The gap is smaller than the NSFW question makes it look, because Character AI wins on conversation polish and media while SpicyChat wins on freedom and, at the entry tier, price.

Content rules: the real dividing line

SpicyChat allows mature and NSFW roleplay for verified adults. It is not a free-for-all. The platform bans minor-coded characters, real people, and non-consent framed as acceptable content. In the UK and roughly 25 US states, opening NSFW bots requires a third-party age check before anything loads.

Character AI enforces a strict SFW policy. Explicit scenes are blocked on every plan, and the filter cannot be switched off. That is a design decision, not a paywall.

Characters and creation tools

SpicyChat's library runs to hundreds of thousands of bots, though that figure is unofficial. Character AI's library is measured in millions according to published guides, and it has the stronger community layer: group chats with multiple bots in one room are a native feature.

On the creation side, SpicyChat gives you a character definition with name, avatar, greeting, backstory and personality. Paid tiers add personas and bigger token windows. Its toolset is genuinely deep for a platform at this price: model switching, Director Mode, Lorebooks and Semantic Memory.

Character AI goes the other way — fewer knobs, more room. Its Definition field holds up to 32,000 characters, the greeting gets 4,096 characters plus five alternate openings, and a Lorebook is included on every plan for world rules. If you enjoy writing a character properly rather than tweaking sliders, that is a real advantage.

Conversation quality and memory

This is where the two diverge most after content rules.

SpicyChat's recall depends on what you pay. The free tier carries 4,096 tokens, roughly 20 recent messages of context. True Supporter doubles that to 8,192 tokens; I'm All In reaches 16,384. Paid users also get a Memory Manager, and Semantic Memory 2.0 saves details automatically rather than waiting for you to pin them.

Character AI approaches memory differently: Pinned Memories, 15 per chat on the free plan and 30 when paying, plus 1,000 messages of history per character since December 2025. It also keeps messages unlimited on every tier, which changes how you use the app — you stop rationing replies.

Reply length is the other practical difference. SpicyChat's cheap tiers cap replies at 180 tokens, which reads short. Bots respond in about 4 to 7 seconds, slower when the queue fills. If you want long, novelistic paragraphs, plan for a higher tier.

Voice, images and calls

Character AI is the more media-complete product. Every account gets voice, two-way calls, Imagine images and AvatarFX short videos, with daily limits on the extras rather than hard paywalls.

SpicyChat charges for its media. In-chat images start at the True Supporter tier ($19.95 a month), and text-to-speech with custom voices sits on I'm All In. There are no live calls at all. If voice conversation is the point for you, this comparison is close to settled.

SpicyChat raised prices on 8 September 2026; older write-ups still quote $5 to $24.95 a month and are out of date. Reports on the free daily message cap conflict — 150, about 100, or 2,000 depending on who you ask — so treat any figure you see as unconfirmed.

Character AI's c.ai+ removes ads and adds priority access to new features. Some comparisons list it at $120 annually; the help centre says $94.99. Privacy and safety

Both platforms state that character creators cannot read your chats. Beyond that, the records differ.

SpicyChat is run by Montreal-based NextDay AI, which says it passed 100 million users in 2025. Its privacy policy states no retention period, which is a gap rather than a reassurance — you cannot tell how long your conversations sit on their servers. The VerifyWise index scored SpicyChat's disclosure 19 out of 100. Trustpilot sits at 2.1 out of 5 from 61 reviews as of 9 October 2026, with moderation appeals and support responsiveness recurring themes.

Character AI was built by ex-Google researchers Daniel De Freitas and Noam Shazeer. It uses chats to train models by default, with opt-outs available, and staff and vendors may access content for moderation. It settled lawsuits over harm to teens in January 2026, and age assurance may ask adults for a selfie or ID through Persona. Minimum age is 13, or 16 in the UK and EEA, and under-18 users lost open-ended chat on 25 November 2025.

Neither is a private diary. Keep real names, addresses and financial details out of every chat, whichever you pick.

Everyday use: where they feel the same

Sign-up is quick on both. SpicyChat needs only an email code or an Apple account. Both let you browse a public library, start chatting in seconds and keep a list of characters you return to. Both have free tiers that are usable rather than demo-only. Neither will hand you a companion who remembers a six-month relationship in detail on a free plan — that is a paid feature everywhere in this category.
